I should be working on my quotation, actually

July 12, 2008 · 4 Comments

‘Twenty one’ was great. ‘Cept the loonnnngg wait prior the show, too many commercials from GV. Tsktsk.

The plot’s intriguing. Jim Sturgess is cute. Kate Bosworth is hawt. And Aaron Yoo is funny (so is Josh Gad, actually.) They make it bearable that the movie was a tad draggy.

Ying and I had an absolutely enjoyable two hours gawking and squealing at Jim Sturgess’ leading role as Ben Campbell - geeky boring MIT Math genius turned multi-persona card-counting whiz (at where else but Vegas; BLACKJACK!!)

Tell me - Is he CUTE or not?!

I am going to start learning card-counting from now on; prep myself for some big winnings next CNY - Ban Luck!! Ban Ban!! Gor Leng!!

Meng, watch out! Peanut-structures will help you no more!
Behold the next BlackJack Queen! :D

Have you ever watched this? I’m always lagging behind, I know. Storyline revolves around a Chicago man (stars Kyle Chandler as Gary Hobson) who myseriously receives tomorrow’s papers every morning, accompanied by the orange tabby cat above.

Basically, Gary and his two friends make use of the “future” info to try prevent tragedies from occuring. Co-starring Shanesia Davis-Williams (Gary’s blind receptionist friend) and Fisher Stevens (his former fellow stockbroker cum best friend), Early Edition premiered on CBS nearly twelve years ago in 1996, and I only recently caught it on AXN.

Dig the idea behind the show, and my family’s so captivated by it they literally stuck by the TV to watch it every weeknights!

Also… I heard Friday Night Lights (also starring Kyle Chandler) is another critically acclaimed show that first aired two years ago - I know, am still lagging behind time. Am going to try catching it on Star World, as it is, I already missed quite a few episodes!

I stumbled upon this (great) blog some time ago whilst researching for my presentation.

Beth is the writer, and mum of two really cute kids (who are barely twelve mths apart in age? I think.) She suffered a devastating loss of her other twin boys in her belly a few mths before expected delivery; and reading her grief-stricken entries about her longing and regrets she will have for the rest of her life makes me feel as if I do understand her pain, her loss, her grief.

Yet, I think I won’t really know what’s she going through, the extent of pain and loss she has to go through, etc. How can we ever, right?

Her writing touches and inspires me. I hope I can be strong too, if not stronger, in a way or another. Of course, there are also upbeat entries such as working from home, her online business, friendship/family, moving woes, beautiful pictures of her kids, her new home, etc. And she gets other writers/friends to guest post on her blog (when she’s busy)! P.S The entry titled ‘Expiration Date’ made me bawled my eyes out for her. P.P.S No, I am not a stalker. I appreciate her writing, that’s all!

Who wants to guest post on my wordpress, I think I’ll be too busy to blog regularly soon!

Slumber Party (of sorts)

June 25, 2008 · No Comments

ARHHHHHHH.

(Pardon me, am doing some stretching for my poor joints.)

I’m going cross-eyed, and very much hunchback-ed (I haven’t so much moved from the PC except for the occasional toilet breaks). I think I “zek” my back last night when showering, too lil’ movements for the entire day. My neck aches, my back hurts. Ouch.

I am adamant about clinching “this”! At the same time, what if….

Slap that away. I have to, and WILL do well.

Anyway, am taking a lil’ break this evening. Am going to a slumber party of sorts at Min’s later, perhaps take some sneak peaks of their project stuffs, hehe. Lost my knacks at Microsoft Office, Excel and Powerpoint especially, ever since our very historic graduation from TP.

JIA YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU! Jimmy says to JIA YOU, and he is glad that following our chat so many frigging months ago, I am still motivated about the things I wanna do. To which I told him, zest and drive are all I possess now, and I better do it well!

Gotta go find my hideous PJ’s now, Mr Phua Jiaming is going in his birthday suit! My god! HAHA!!

P.S OB, when are we having our own slumber party too? People who wants to get their own apartments, better do it ASAP! Me want OB slumber party!

of Hardwork & Anticipation

May 31, 2008 · 4 Comments

Gotta try harder.

Never say die, just like the Energizer Bunny!

With due respect to Sheng’s once famous slogan on his pretty-optimistic-outlook-of-life (I dunno if he’s still so positive though, hehe.) I say,

MEIQI MEIQI, GO GO GO!

Haha.

Candles of Hope (I wish I could do more)

Candles of Hope

(These were the pictures I had wanted to upload for the longest time. Phew.)

Sheng hit a spot in me with his response to my previous post. I agree with him, akin to the Sichuan quake victims, the Burma cyclone victims require the help too, despite the media painting an unglorious picture of their not-so-righteous officials. A lil’ more love wouldn’t hurt right?

Let the candles help not only the quake victims, but also the cyclone victims. Spread the love; a little goes a long way.

xoxo

The humanity that transcends race, colour (and politics)

May 28, 2008 · 2 Comments

It is not the time to speak of race, colour, politics, or in Sharon Stone’s case, karma. Got a rude shock upon reading about it, cannot stop thinking how inappropriate that statement of her was. Wells, more on that later.

I have been tearing alot of late, what’s with all the heartbreaking news of increasing death toll, tear-inducing stories of the victims & their families, and moving stories of the efforts of rescue workers.

I remembered how I wailed out loud at news of one victim having to saw off her legs in order to survive. There was virtually no way for the rescue workers to reach and pull her out from the rubbles, unless she saw off BOTH HER LEGS - ON HER OWN first! Y_Y

To be completely honest, I cannot imagine placing myself in their shoes nor can I truly understand what they are going through. A similarly forlorn Ying said everyone has their own battles to fight, and in this case I say, a long battle between mother earth and mankind.

The insignificant me can only hope for the victims to rest in peace, the families to be able to seek solace, and the survivors to live even better, for themselves, for the 60 over thousand lives that’s sacrificed in this painful disaster. It is of course not easy, for the anguish of loss and grief is so real, and brutally painful.

The other aspect that really need a much longer span of attention in the near future would be rebuilding! It’s gonna be a long term effort in rebuilding the affected town/province, as well as the emotional well-being of people who lived on - that I believe needs ‘reconstructing’ the most.

(Digress: I have some pictures I wanna upload for this post, but have been trying futilely for the past three hours or so. I truly hate WordPress at this moment, it has successfully treaded on my very short nerves!)

Lifted from http://sichuan-memorial.org,

Open your hearts.
Humanity transcends race, color, religion, and nationalism.
We may be 7000 miles from the destruction,
but feelings of deep loss are universal.

加油.

3 minutes of silence (the aftermath)

May 20, 2008 · No Comments

Am perpetually in shock lately.

Most of you would have watched the recent news, headlined first by the cyclone in Myammar, following shortly by the massive earthquake in China. It deeply impacted me somehow, the crying faces, the lifeless bodies, the honourable rescue workers/police/medics/volunteers, the strong fight the affected victims put up, etc.

As I laid in the pool on Sunday, observing the crowd around me, I concur yet again to how 生命是如此不堪一击, or in fact, “人”是如此不堪一击. Not just human lives, but how mankind is THAT easy to hurt or destroy. It’s almost effortless.

We can do more, more than just aiding through donating money and food supplies. We can do more, but what can we do? Pray harder? Perhaps. Pray for the death toll to stop increasing; pray for minimized aftershocks; pray for the arrival of sunshine after the terrible nightmare. Pray for the rainbow, colours of hope. Pray for a new lease of life. Pray for mankind. Pray for strength.

China announced flags to be raised haf-mast, I guess not just the flags, everyone everywhere else are raising their emotions half-mast too.

いじきりょく. Willpower. Hang on to this, it is vital in believing you can tide through this.

Be safe.

Conned.

May 20, 2008 · 2 Comments

I was coaxed conned into visiting JCO Donuts at Raffles City Shopping Centre last week. It was the first, and most likely, the last too. All thanks to smart aleck Jim who suggested we give JCO a shot seeing how it’s new and pretty crowded. Typical Singaporean Mindset. New & Crowded = Good. WRONG!

“You should give it a chance, maybe it’s better than Donut Factory?”

MY FOOT!!

To begin with, there weren’t even enough standing space when we stepped into the very teeny weeny place. When we finally found seats for two, it was so cramped we couldn’t get our feets in properly (whatever. maybe i have dinosaur feet.) And to think the sofas were supposed to be comfy, so you can “make yourselves at home”! No they were absolutely not, since I was so uncomfortable cramped up like that. I kinda understood how sardines felt when they were stuffed into cans.

To make it worse, I felt I was being gawked like monkeys in the zoo or clowns at the circus by the people queueing.

On the other hand, I had my fair share of “observing” too. It was very fascinating watching the counter staff from my seat. They were so disorganised it was actually quite a sight. The flow was so messy, Jim had to repeat his orders numerous times to a few staffs. And we merely ordered three donuts and two drinks.

Did I mention their staple product, i.e D-O-N-U-T, SUCKS BIG TIME?

 Yike!!

It was horrid! It’s definitely not worth the fat piling! Definitely not worth my swimming 20 laps under the hot sun! Definitely not worth cracking my brain cells thinking how else to work off the calories! Definitely not worth wasting time regretting how I shouldn’t have eaten the eeky carbs!

The yucky cream filling was OMGsoffreakingdisgusting and the drink so schwweeet I think I’ll contract diabetes if I did finish it!

SAY NO TO JCO DONUTS! EVER!

@#$%&$!!*!#$^

Iced Lemon Tee’s Good News

May 18, 2008 · No Comments

Otherwise known as “the gathering that would have been complete if not for the birthday girl’s absence”. In case you are scratching your head, you read it right.

Ironically, the main agenda of 14-May was to celebrate Ms Mabelline “eeediort” Goh’s belated birthday on 11-May. The problem was, eeediort did not turn up (and on a very short notice at that!)  :(

[Surprisingly, I was the FIRST to arrive that evening. I hate to be early because I always end up having to wait for the rest longer, and whenever I am punctual, the said people will be extra late. Damn.]

Regina (aka Iced Lemon TEE, Earl Grey TEE, Pearl Milk TEE. All kinds of tea, basically.) was second to arrive, and she came with a piece of good news for us. I was asked to guess.

“Wait. Don’t tell me. YOU’RE IN LOVE? YOU GOT A BF? DENNIS? ” Wrong. She don’t have any other sort of feelings except friendship for this ex-coursemate-current-colleague. He’s taken too, by the way. Aiya, we have been trying to market our Ah Dai. Please drop a comment if interested. Urps. And I digressed.

“Hmm. YOU GOT A PROMOTION? A PAY RAISE?” You wish.

“Errr…I know I know, YOU GOT DAMN GOOD RESULTS FOR YOUR PAPERS!” The results aren’t even out yet.

“Ahhh!! YOUR PR’S APPROVED?” She has been a PR for the past five years or so. Urps. But quite close to it.

“Oh! Yes! YOU GOT YOUR CITIZENSHIP!” Finally got it right, phew.

Subsequently, when the remaining four lovelies (Fen, Jim, Ying & Yan) arrived, they had their fair share of “fun” too. I derived alot of fun from it, at least. Fen’s guesses were ALL identical to mine, including the PR part! Regina rolled her eyes twice as hard upon hearing that from Fen.

For the bulk of it, all of them had similar guesses. At one point, someone pointed out that guesses should be steered in a “different” direction, which triggered hilarious inputs by Ying LIKE “YOU BOUGHT A NEW DOG?” We got near-asthmatic attacks laughing at that! Ying is definitely a closet clown, I tell you!

Anyway.. quoting Fen, Regina being a PR or Singapore Citizen does not really differ much. She was just this EXTREMELY innocent (read: uncorrupted mind) buddy who visits Malaysia on a more frequent basis than most of us. Heh.

Love them!

* The only two peekchures taken that evening….
